Everyday Susie (Hipstamatic)

In June of 2020 I drove up to Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood to see the Capitol Hill Organized/Occupied Protest (CHOP)/Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone (CHAZ) for myself. This was a month long protest by Seattle residents in response to the murder of George Floyd and continuing police brutality. I'm white but I went by myself. I honestly did not believe I was in any danger, and I was right. I felt welcomed. The protesters were happy to see people show up who were willing to listen and learn. People were angry and rightly so, but that anger was being turned into education, music, art and so many other positive avenues of expression. I listened to speeches, learned things, witnessed a bit of history. The photo here is the only example of violence I saw the entire day. One white man tried to make trouble, shouting racial slurs and making a fool of himself. People simply surrounded him and escorted him out of the area. He tripped at one point. People helped him up, offered him water, and spoke to him in calm tones. He was crying and apologizing when I last saw him.

First one works better.

Casually browsing Wikipedia, I noticed there was no photo of the Tacoma Narrows Airport. I'd never seen the airport, so I drove out there and took one. Okay, so I took more than one. Here's one of the unused photos. For the flash, I decided to show how some flashes can really wash out Susie.

The flash gives a distinctly cold war fifties feel to it. Interesting

Yes, what Bill said.

I didn’t post anything Friday or Saturday, so I’m catching up. I spotted this BMW 6-Series coupe in the local Safeway parking lot.

A friend in work has one of these and gives me a lift home now and then. Its so low slung, I almost dislocate a hip getting out. Again, its a triumph of style over substance as the film bases oversaturation and odd colours swamp the image. Blanko is cetrainly giving old Susie a run for her money here.

I spent yesterday watching the Indy 500 so forgive me for cheating a little bit for this one. The image is the car Mario Andretti drove to victory in 1969. It's from the game Forza Motorsport 7, captured on my XBox One. It's fascinating how the right flash can almost completely overcome the effects of the Susie lens, which kind of negates the point of using Susie, doesn't it?

Wow - its amazung to see how far video games have come in the last five years. I was watching Ford V Ferrari again the other night, so already in a vintage gear head frame of mind, but this is a great shot, both reminiscent of the look of bintage footage. Hard to call it between them

I've always liked the Blanco C16 film. It gives photos a gorgeous light wash. It subdues Susie's worst tendencies without taking away the qualities that make Susie Susie. I have been using Pop Rox, Jolly Rainbo 2X, Apollo, and Triple Crown flashes a lot since they add the most depth and contrast to the photos, but I thought it would be interesting to see how a flash can completely wash out a photo, in this case, the Burst Lite VI flash. It does this to everything. Might be good for a night photo, though.

I fell behind by a day again, so you get two from me today. This is John. We became best friends in high school on the day John Lennon died, and have continued to be best friends ever since. Blanko Freedom 13 film has negligible effect on Susie. I decided to use the standard flash just so people could see how it behaves with Susie. Which admittedly isn't much, just washes it out a bit more than it already is.

Wow… what an experience and story. It’s encouraging to hear how people can be their best self, when the “news” likes to project the opposite. I think the first combo works well with your image.

Wow… they are both super cool! Love them both… so weird how adding a flash makes it B&W with those fab pops of color!

They’re both great. The bottom one is so sharp and I love the blur.

I’ve fallen three days behind, so let’s get back on track. Another photo of my friend John, trying out a Gretsch resonator guitar at the local guitar store. While we both own guitars, it’s more accurate to say he is a guitar player, while I am a guitar owner. No flash alternative today.

A new Hipstapak is out today, and the timing is perfect, since the new film, Bluegrass 14, is next in line alphabetically. It’s supposed to have some wild color shifts, but let’s see what strong-willed Susie has to say about that. I love these old signs that somehow survive years of abuse unprotected in the weather.

Okay, finally back on track. Today’s film is BLM Shout, so it made sense to use another photo from the Seattle BLM/George Floyd protests in 2020. I’m posting four versions of the same photo. Text and frame, text only, frame only, and no text or frame. Let’s see what we get.
