Huawei P20 Pro

Thank you, Ann, this phone was/is still the one I'd like to get instead a new iPhone. But I could never test it properly, just a comparison shot at the shop. I still have an eye on it, but would miss all the apple apps. :)
But I'm always tempted to get a P20 Pro just for the Leica lenses. Your book of tests is very helpful as I know you'll dig deeper as I would, too. :) Thanks for doing it so detailed.
As long as you don’t use the front camera which is a dog. Also, I am not very impressed with the telephoto camera which is only 8Mb so less than the iPhone. The 40Mb is awesome and I think the monochrome looks like it has great potential - I still need to give this a better test. I don’t yet feel I have tested it fully. I’m going to spend February using the P20 entirely as my main camera and that will be the REAL test.

I have found myself adapting to an Android quicker than I thought but I did start off my Smart life with a Samsung and I do tend to pick up new gadgets quickly. I am extremely fond of my iPhone 7+ though and I still feel more at ease with it naturally because I’m used to it but if it passed away I think I would definitely switch to the P20 Pro. Apple prices have become too unrealistic. My only regret is that Moment haven’t yet come out with a phone case for Huawei phones and probably won’t. I have bought a cheap Kase cover from China which will probably take forever to get here but which allows 17mm lenses to be attached. Some people have had fairly good results with Apexel lenses but I don’t really want to get anymore lenses at the moment. Will use my iPhone for macro now that I have the Moment lenses. I do have the macro lens which came with my Beastgrip which I can attach with a clip to the P20 and will test with that.

Phones have front cameras ??

I have often wanted to have some sort of Android phone to explore so I would know more about them. That doesn’t mean I want to replace my iPhone but I’m just curious. I wouldn’t want to have to have another cell account just to use the camera. Strictly wifi, like an iPod.

The moto g range might be worth a look. They are lower mid range but pack excellent hardware for the price. The camera won't match an iPhone or high end android of course but very nice for the cost. I got my sons one each and the eldest is doing photography at school using just his phone.

Wait!!! As long as you can. Today I read that Oppo is promising a phone with a 10x (sliding and optical not digital) zoom. Seems they are doing very good mobiles for approx half of Apples prices. It is probably more speculation than fact at the moment, but it’s obviously possible. Read about Oppo a little more an found it interesting. Three lenses on the back and the best one in front with 25MP. Back reads 8MP, 20 MP (main camera) and depth detection on the third. What I found was nice. Maybe a reason to use the front camera a little more and just snap over the shoulder instead of straight ahead. :D
But jokes aside: it shall have the best fingerprint sensor – invisible hidden within the screen. Colours at the moment plain or blue/pink or mint/violet (mine :inlove: :D) the presentation might be in February. Only question is: will it be available in what parts of Europe or even Germany? Maybe this new Chinese phone is even better than a Huawei. I’ll keep my eyes peeled. I could find two on Amazon: R17 neo and R17 pro and at the moment I have no idea what the difference is besides the colour. :). It as long it’s not the one with a 10x zoom I don’t care. :)

Oh, downside at the moment 128GB max. Not much for collecting photos. :)
And all dual sim. Good for those who need it, but I’d like mono for a cheaper price. ;)

It’s very useful for me to have a second phone for holiday use. I always buy a sim in the place we go and an old Nokia I used to use has given up the ghost and wasn’t really useful enough anymore anyway. The fact that it now has a decent camera means that I won’t always have to lug both around but can just check my UK phone at the end of the day.

Hopefully, I won’t need a new phone for a while now!

I'm reading that it will just be available for the Asian market, but I'm sure some will be sold worldwide by enterprising people.
Nice to see a few new names to challenge APPLE and SAMSUNG!

Yes, an you can go to the shop without having a date in advance. :)
I wish I could test it like ImageArt. And Oppo might indeed sell it to Europe as well as they started with the R17. Well, let’s see what comes up.

More P20 Pro images taken in Photos mode.

Went on an eight mile ramble today with my rambling group. It was a very crisp glorious day but it’s quite difficult to take images when the pace is fairly fast!

I’m pleased with some of the images I took particularly the landscapes. The white balance seems better than the iPhone and it is more saturated so I find less need to take it into Snapseed. I’m still not convinced about close-ups. Yes, I did get one good close-up of a duck but that was amongst 10 unfocused duffs. I feel like the iPhone would have given me more usable shots but would it? Are my expectations higher than they should be.

This image was cropped and slightly tweaked in Snapseed:

I loved this photo for grunge purposes but was disappointed that not more of the flower was in focus. I wasn’t that close.

The duck image is a beauty! I think with any phone or camera we forget how many duff shots we get for that one standout shot. More practice and I think you'll be really rocking the P20

Don't know about Germany, but one Huawei executive has been arrested in Poland on charges of spying, and their CFO has been arrested in Canada (for extradition to the US) for allegedly helping the company to evade sanctions against Iran.

https://www.cnn.com/2019/01/11/tech/poland-huawei-exec-arrest/index.html

Also, from that article:

"Huawei is a Chinese telecommunications company that is viewed by US government officials as a national security risk. Other countries have concerns too: It has been prevented from supplying next-generation 5G equipment to Australia and New Zealand."

Don't know if it's the cause of, result of, or unrelated to the US-China saber-rattling trade war. And while the US government did allege that Huawei was building backdoors into its devices, there's been no actual discovery of any such tricks, as far as I know (which, as usual, is not very far).

I'd guess that as long as these things remain alleged, rather than proven or disproven, Huawei is going to be politically iffy in many western countries.

I've just read they are considering banning them in Germany !:rolleyes::lol:

Sigh.

The Chinese have never felt that they need to adhere to the ethics of the rest of the world. The mainland Chinese flocked to Hong Kong for goods because they could never trust that expensive designer goods were the real McCoy if bought in China. Babies died because formula milk was doctored to make it cheaper so they flocked to Hong Kong to get baby formula and in the end HK had to restrict the amount each person could take back to China. Copyright means nothing and I’m sure they feel the same about spying.

I'm using the Moto 5 plus as well and it's doing quite well. But it's to a great part the camera app which defines the image quality.

Having used both, the Moto camera and a modified Google GCam, I'd probably would have a look at the Google Pixel phones.

But it's hard to find the right one because there are so many.

Bizarre...

Wow, just loving the P20 Pro. There’s lots to get used to and therefore quite a few niggles but got some fab images today.

Some of the problems:
  • Even though the resolution is set to 40Mb, the Photo option only seems to be taking 10Mb images so need to investigate that.
  • The screen turns off with the camera open which doesn’t happen with the iPhone. Irritating. Another setting I need to check.
  • Below the camera button are 3 action buttons, and when I’m concentrating on the shot I hit these by mistake and close the window! Also irritating
  • A2B7188E-F35B-4C42-8F27-D28E5ECC90D4.jpeg
The inability to use zoom in any of the options when the resolution is 40Mb is really frustrating. The x2 zoom on my iPhone is invaluable to me.

A big bonus: the battery lasts F-O-R-E-V-E-R :)
