How did you even see that on a blade of grass???

It is part of an ornamental grass plant in a pot near the house which meant it was fairly obvious.

22nd January - Swan Family
Today we saw this family of last years cygnets with one of the adults on the canal. It feels lovely to see the swans as, sadly, we have seen several dead lately, either through predation or by the avian fluenza that seems very prevalent this year in our area. It is believed to have come over with migratory birds that arrive in the autumn. I just hope the other adult has not lost its’ life.

23rd January - Two Suns
Although today was predominantly cloudy, the sun did appear for a short while and managed to capture the sun’s rays reflected in the water creating 2 suns!

Ah, lovely. I’m going to miss being close to a canal. We have loads of swans on ours too. I always used to keep a bag of proper swan pellets in my car and haven’t done it for a while.

24th January - Redmile Church
Another canal walk today, near the village of Redmile and its’ beautiful gothic church spire.

25th January - Walking on Water
Quite a big frost last night led to the canal freezing over making it difficult for the ducks. This group were having a bit of a race trying to move on the frozen water.

26th January - First of the Year
Bizarrely, one of my Narcisuss bulbs has decided to come up in the gravel and as we have a few days of sunny periods they have flowered 2 months early! I think it maybe because the bulb is under the gravel so probably it has kept the bulb warmer.

27th January - Barnacle Goose Visitor
Spotted this one goose on its’ own wandering around the farmland by the canal. It must have flown off course as not normally seen this far inland.

28th January - New Buds of Spring
On today’s walk as the sun was shining on the buds of one of the cherry trees. A definite sign of spring.

29th January - Holding on - just!
Spotted this tree that had clearly been struck by lightning in the past, with one of the main branches suffering a blast leaving it hanging on with a few shreds of branch.

30th January - Information Bench
Usually they are information boards, but on the Grantham canal, these benches have begun to appear at various points along the canal. I really like this idea.

31sr January - The Last of the Rosehips
A couple of months ago the hedgerows were covered in all manner of berries, but now there just a few here and there as they’ve been eaten by the birds especially the migrant fieldfares.

30th January - Information Bench

What a great bench, but I imagine it was very expensive.

1st February - Ammunition Dumps
Alongside the canal by Redmile village is the old station area where there is a field that isn’t the usual flat farm fields. This has large mounds around which, during the Second World War the RAF buried ammunition here away from their base at Langar a few miles away. The ammunition is gone but the mounds remain to remind you of what was there in the past.

2nd February - Lichen
Noticed this on a rotted trunk in the woods and as I got closer was amazed at the different textures that just looked a grey/blue mass from the distance.

3rd February - Aconites and Snowdrops
As it was brighter today the Aconites and Snowdrops opened up to greet the sun. Lovely to see a bit of colour when it’s been fairly dull in the garden.

Playing around with Snapseed and Distressed FX.

5th February - Dead Trees
A black and white conversion on a group of dead trees at Rutland Water woodland.

We won’t get our first Spring blooms until late March at the earliest.
