Okay, all right. The show was the Canadian sketch show SCTV, and Johnny Lauren was played by the late John Candy. Polynesiantown was a parody of Chinatown.

SCTV started the careers of Candy, Eugene Levy, Rick Moranis, Catherine O’Hara, Andrea Martin, Joe Flaherty, and Martin Short. Fully half of my pop culture references come from this show.
