Notifications are spotty

Notifications to threads are spotty.
It's inconsistent and there's no pattern I can point to but threads just fall off my notification list.
To be more specific, B&W and colour challenges where I spend most of my time on mobitog can drop off my notifications most weeks. Other threads I spend less time on also do.
Here are my alert preferences:

Am I missing something?

*I think* The notifications will only give you an alert to a new post in a watched thread, it won’t then keep updating you each time, if you don’t read them, if that makes sense?

Eg - I get an alert to this thread when the next person replies. If I don’t then visit the thread, the notification doesn’t update if someone subsequently posts.

Does that make sense? Could that be what’s occurring here?
 
Alerts and New Posts keep me “in the know”, without fail. “Alerts” are for all the threads I’m following or if I’m tagged or one of my posts is replied to. “New Posts” includes literally every new post since I was here last, so that one IMO should be the default stopping post to make sure you haven’t missed anything.

That makes sense and sounds like it explains my experience. I do visit a thread when someone replies or posts but tend not to when I get a like. Likes are nice but an alert someone's liked something is already all the info.

I'm not sure about that. For example, if I'm here reading a particular thread, and somebody posts in a different thread I'm watching, I get an alert. If I stay where I am (don't go to read the new post in the other thread, don't pull down the Alert menu), and somebody posts again in the different thread, I still get another alert.

I think. I haven't paid much attention to this until rizole brought it up.

It's the found faces, sign spotting and 365 threads that throw me. I'll go and have a look or post on one of them and see a load of posts that are new to me that I've not been notified of to my knowledge. The weekly challenge threads are less a problem as I vist them most days anyway so am less likely to miss stuff.
