I got a couple of emails this year about entries to a competition called SmartFest but the entries cost about £5 unless you bought lots in which case it was probably £4.50 each. Needless to say I didn’t even post about it.

The results are now out and I have to say the chosen photos are pretty amazing. Don’t think I could have competed with these. Who needs a DSLR!!

Amazing images. I recognise some of the names from other comps.

Yes that was the Irish one wasn't it. Linked into Mobiography? I had some emails about that too, bit expensive. The judges are familiar but the winners aren't. Although I do know Brendan OSé the last image on the list.
The quality is fantastic, apart from the naked boy with wires around him  As usual I'd love to know a little more about the equipment and editing details.

Wow. There are some incredible iMages in this contest. Like John I would love to know what they used and how the iMages were edited: if at all.

Here you go. The phone used is encoded in the image file name, in most cases. The EXIF info doesn't say much about what apps were used (and it would only have the last app used), but Dina Alfasi uses VSCO.

In order, as they are on the page, starting with the grand prize winner:

Dina Alfasi "Wish you were here"- iPhone X
Anirudh Koppula "The Sibling Bond"- Samsung S8
Christopher Comeso "Ying Yang"- Huawei
Daniel Heilig "Say Cheeeeese"- iPhone 6s
Dina Alfasi "Airplanes and flowers" - iPhone X
Dominika Koszowska "A Man and His Dog" - Sony
Emily Kelting Sadhu "Holy Man" - (unknown)
Jeffrey Simpson "Unity" - iPhone 8 Plus
Jia Shusen "As the shadow follows the form" - iPhone X
Jia Shusen "Irrepressible Joy" - iPhone X
Joseph Cyr "Conversation in the cloisters" - iPhone X
Kate Zari Roberts "Lake MacIntosh" - iPhone X
Kimberley Wallis "Who Looks In and Who Looks Out" - Samsung
Lee Atwell "Buddies" - iPhone X
Leigh Darilek "Lucha Libre Pin" - iPhone Xs Max
Nicola Pratt "Will the Wind Remember" - iPhone 7 Plus
Marta Spencer "A Mother’s Love" - iPhone 7 Plus
Pierre Hauser "In His Lane" - iPhone 8 Plus
Rad Drew "Farm Family" - iPhone X
Scott Galloway "Lost Moment" - iPhone X
Seshukumar Sareday "Alley Romance" - iPhone X
Teelip Lim "Wired" - iPhone 7 Plus
Tim Bingham "Caught Napping" - Samsung
Trevor Messersmith "Midtown" - iPhone (unknown)
Valeria Cammareri "Mom and Dad" - iPhone X
Valeria Cammareri "The Lake" - iPhone X
Zaini Ariff "Lunch" - iPhone 7 Plus
Angela KAT McClelland "Delicate Freedom" - iPhone X
Brendan Ó Sé "Bangkok portrait" - iPhone (unknown)

Great detective work Ted, seems the X is dominant. Not sure what that really means i.e. is it the best camera or just the most popular?
Would have liked a Pixel to have popped up there but hey!

I was surprised there weren't more Androids in the batch. We know the cameras are good enough, so maybe the word didn't get out?

My guess on the iPhone X: A lot of photographers upgraded to the X when it came out because of the dual cameras in the slimmer form factor but being more interested in photography than in gear, they didn't feel any need to upgrade to the similar Xs when it came out.

We also know there are far more photographic apps on Apple than Android, I'm sure that's a factor.

Wow Ted! We are looking for good detectives if you ever think of becoming a cop ;)
I didn’t see any of that info on their site. I was looking on my iPhone so Safari might not offer as much info. Fascinating spread of devices

Thanks, Ann - just had a nice browse! Some lovely images in that lot. And thanks Ted for the equipment info. Hopefully this comp will grow year to year.

Is it me, or does it seem odd that the prize is an actual camera?

A really expensive camera, too. And for a contest run by a company that only makes mobile apps. I thought it was strange also. Still, you could probably sell the Leica in a hurry for $4000 and buy 4 iPhones.

Winners have just been announced for the MIRA mobile. (I think)

Landscape winner was a bit ho hum but overall standard very high. There's a few in the portrait category that will make watchers of the DFP smile
I rather like the elements of the winning photo — shock-horror headlines all a bit ho hum to the subject :lmao:

Some lovely images - and, to borrow a sinnerjohn ism, ‘is it just me, or are a lot of the images rather formulaic?’

Of course the image of a naked woman packaged in bubblewap (including parcel stickers!) with her mouth duct-taped — that one is startling in its originality, nottomention the new bar set by its technical excellence.
