So what have we got this year and are we interested??!!
Amazing images. I recognise some of the names from other comps.I got a couple of emails this year about entries to a competition called SmartFest but the entries cost about £5 unless you bought lots in which case it was probably £4.50 each. Needless to say I didn’t even post about it.
The results are now out and I have to say the chosen photos are pretty amazing. Don’t think I could have competed with these. Who needs a DSLR!!
Yes that was the Irish one wasn't it. Linked into Mobiography? I had some emails about that too, bit expensive. The judges are familiar but the winners aren't. Wow. There are some incredible iMages in this contest. Like John I would love to know what they used and how the iMages were edited: if at all.I got a couple of emails this year about entries to a competition called SmartFest but the entries cost about £5 unless you bought lots in which case it was probably £4.50 each. Here you go. The phone used is encoded in the image file name, in most cases. The EXIF info doesn't say much about what apps were used (and it would only have the last app used), but Dina Alfasi uses VSCO.Wow. There are some incredible iMages in this contest. I was surprised there weren't more Androids in the batch. We know the cameras are good enough, so maybe the word didn't get out?Great detective work Ted, seems the X is dominant. Not sure what that really means i.e. is it the best camera or just the most popular?
Would have liked a Pixel to have popped up there but hey!
We also know there are far more photographic apps on Apple than Android, I'm sure that's a factor.I was surprised there weren't more Androids in the batch. We know the cameras are good enough, so maybe the word didn't get out?
My guess on the iPhone X: A lot of photographers upgraded to the X when it came out because of the dual cameras in the slimmer form factor but being more interested in photography than in gear, they didn't feel any need to upgrade to the similar Xs when it came out.

WOWFirst prize, a Leica Q2 (retail price 5000 USD). No entry fee.
Is it me, or does it seem odd that the prize is an actual camera?IOS only:
The developers of Halide and Spectre are running a contest for images taken with either of those apps and uploaded to Instagram between May 28 and June 28. First prize, a Leica Q2 (retail price 5000 USD). No entry fee.
Details: https://halide.cam/contest/
A really expensive camera, too. And for a contest run by a company that only makes mobile apps. I thought it was strange also. Still, you could probably sell the Leica in a hurry for $4000 and buy 4 iPhones. Is it me, or does it seem odd that the prize is an actual camera?![]()
Hmm but can't you import DSLR pics into those apps? Do you see what I'm sayingIs it me, or does it seem odd that the prize is an actual camera?![]()
No import, no. They're both camera apps with no editing functions.Hmm but can't you import DSLR pics into those apps? Do you see what I'm saying![]()
Well that's all a bit cynical then isn't itNo import, no. They're both camera apps with no editing functions.
Or an iPhone plus a Samsung? Or 5 iPhones? Why didn’t they make it an iPhone? I would be out taking photos right now!
Absolutely. In fact, why not give 5 people the chance of winning a prize rather than encouraging professional photographers to take part who might fancy the gear....or is that the whole point??Or an iPhone plus a Samsung? Or 5 iPhones?
Winners have just been announced for the MIRA mobile. (I think)
