I see that Polarr are planning to introduce a subscription scheme for their editing app in April. The question is, is it worth it? Already you have to pay almost £20 to get the full version of the app so paying even £5-£10 a month would make it one of the most expensive photo apps out there. In a crowded app market with some superb editing apps you can get for free or for a lot less than £20 one has to wonder if this is good value for money. Any Polarr users out there that would consider paying this subscription?

For me, nothing is worth a subscription. :barf:

I've had Polarr for a long time, but it's never made it into regular use, what with Snapseed, ACDSee Pro, Enlight (not the subscription one), Ultralight, and others already on my iPad. So no, no subscription. (I haven't yet seen an app I'd be willing to take out a subscription for.)

I agree with Ted. Hmmm, with the apps too: great minds, and all that ;)

I have Polarr but like others it has never been one of my go to apps and I thought the $28 (here in Canada) was a steep price when there are plenty of editing apps out there for far less money, so I never bought any of the in-apps.
If they are going subscription I will not bother with it at all, again in a crowded editing market there are plenty for less then this app.

Is ANY app worth a subscription? If Affinity (which seems to be the flavour of the month) went subscription, would people drop it like a red hot poker?

It’s cost vs usefulness. Is it worth $10 a month? Maybe not. $10 a year? Sure.

I asked Eugene Kaneko about that when Pixite made Pigment subscription at around 5/week (I think) which was approx the price of the app, paid weekly. I thought the jump from free app/$5 app to 5/week was rather quantum, and wondered why they (all good apps) couldn’t try ‘buy it for a year’ — ie that initial $5 purchase expired after 12 months. Or even a $1/month subscription. Pixite apps are good enough I’m sure every fan would be happy to pay that ongoing lifetime sum (we all know that ‘set and forget’ is the deal with subscription).

Needless to say I did not understand Pixite’s rationale for that big leap, and I haven’t followed up to see if it did what they wanted it to do. With my zero business acumen, I would’ve thought easier to make a return with a low subscription -> lots of subscribers than persuading fewer subscribers to pay a larger subscription. On reflection, maybe that ‘fewer people’ is in fact good business thinking. A few people with more money than sense, sotospeak. Or enough money that they don’t notice the regular debit . Ie maybe that’s all you need : )

That’s $20 a month... $240 a year! A bit insane if you ask me. What is the app doing that’s worth this much money to people?

Definitely no. No subscriptions for me. Polarr just isn’t that useful. In fact I just went and deleted it.

Considering that you can get photoshop for half that. Just on desktop, of course.

I’ve come across a couple of apps that appear to be photo editing apps, but once you get into it you realize the app doesn’t allow any editing at all. Instead, you describe the type of edits you want made, mostly portrait type photos of people, narrow the waist, etc., and then you send the photo away and it comes back “professionally edited”, for a fee of course.

Perhaps they are gambling that if the price is high people will think it must be really good.
