I’ve often wondered if this sort of architectural modification, of a house presumably all in Cary stone originally, is the origin of the phrase ‘to put on a front’. I’ve seen plenty of examples over the years.

I don't know, but it sounds plausible. "Putting up a good front" is how it's usually phrased here, which fits with the idea pretty well.

I might just be clutching at straws. Or 'Put on a good front' here as well. Who knows really, but its interesting that the owners of these buildings did like to upgrade them visually like this one by adding a more modern facade.
