In the 19 century, the redwood-forested hills above Santa Cruz produced timber (naturally), lime (from roasting native limestone in kilns), and gunpowder (powder mills being situated there because they tended to explode).

Sunken ship, Seascape State Beach

The SS Palo Alto, known locally as "the cement ship," was built of reinforced concrete at the end of WWI and was eventually towed to this pier in Aptos (just south of Santa Cruz) where it had a dance floor and other entertainment in the 1930s. It's been battered over the years and finally broke up in the winter storms a few years ago. Full story here:
