I got curious enough to look up the town, and it's 8 miles upriver from the sea, yet still the tides come in enough to raise those boats? Or am I misreading it?

Yes it's tidal, but I see what you mean, these boats squash right down in the mud, but lift when the tide comes in, people live in these boats, some of them are similar to the old Thames sailing barges
