Once I started playing with the image, I soon realised what a crappy exposure I had put up. My apologies (error made in haste).

Well I took a swing at it (many)

I was looking for a "gritty" and "worn" image (much like the character) and wanted the focus to be on the man and his art:

1) Camera+ (auto adjust and square crop)
2) Retouch to get rid of the washing lines
3) FilterStorm for a hard sharpen
4) PhotoStudi0 - Old sketch
5) Leme Cam - Paradise Lens
6) Blender to blend the two images
7) Pixlromatic - Rustic Frame

Shewee, great image, I like the "vibrancy" of the image. Nice one.

Thanks Gareth!

Very effective indeed, Gareth. I think that people sometimes forget how powerful the crop tool is. It can completely change a picture on its own without the need for any other filters and effects. Here is brings out the character of the carver and the carvings on the left.

I'm really late to this party, but here's my attempt. I'll mention the apps used, but couldn't tell you the steps, as I've worked on this one off and on this week. Used Filterstorm, ProHDR, PicGrunger, Scratchcam, Snapseed, and I think that's it. I should mention this was inspired by Gareth's version, as well.

nice one, I like the "mat" or "cloth" texture, adds an "earthy" feel to it

Thanks Gareth and Lisa! The texture is from PicGrunger which was just updated this week. Love that app!

Here's my interpretation. :)

(1) PhotoForge2 to add the colored light.
(2) BlurFX to blur the background, and then desaturate the main subject to set him apart a bit.
(3) Back to PhotoForge2 to add some texture.
(4) Pixlromatic for the frame.
(5) Iris Photo Suite to polarize & resize.

I'm jumping in late. Been swamped at work lately but do sneak a peek or two on Mobitog in some stolen moments. Here's my edit, called "A Simple Man, A Complex Life" inspired by the grace, humility, and hardwork with which these folks face extreme hardships (both natural and manmade). Made with decim8, filterstorm, scratchcam, shockmypic, camera+ and kingcamera.

Gareth, have you or Mr Woodcarver chosen a winner yet? Please post the result here asap, as it's Saturday already and the new thread needs to go up by Sunday with the next poster's image. :)

If you still want to go down the route of bribery, my price is now 600 tonnes of Riesen chocolate toffee, Aaron got a bit too greedy and now wants a 45% cut as he's supplying the henchmen, and Richard said he would settle for 20%, so I'm only going to get 35%, hence the rise :p!

Apologies folks, I did go to see if I could find Thomas, he was not around.
When I got home there was no network.

Yes it was tough to chose  very tough. The mind boggles at the thought of the possibilities in iphoneography.
You are all very talented people, I have learnt so much from you.
Mansi, your image got me, the angle and the overall mood, excellent processing.

So I declare Mansi the winner of this round

Here is my interpretation. I gave this photo of the carver a wood grain look. I started out with adding light, sharpening and a sepia tone in Noir. Next I applied a dream in Dreamcam HD. They are all so good Gareth. I don't know how you will be able to pick just one.

Carver by bichonphoto, on Flickr

Good one Reed, the flow of the 'life lines' are reminiscent of that in the wood which he carves and of those on his face. Great image, as always delivered by you.
