In the intertidal zone you often see rocks with coloured areas like this. A crack or depression in the rock provides some degree of shelter for periwinkles. When the tide is in they become active and graze on the algae on the rock, leaving a bare patch while the surrounding area is still algae covered

These holes were big enough they might actually make sounds in the wind. Ooooooooooo. Maybe it will give rise to “the moaning cliffs” as the holes get more numerous. And we have no shortage of wind.
Certainly the rising tide would make lots of interesting glops and gurgles when the waves would hit the back end of the holes.
