Kite Aerial iPhoneography

The only problem with using kites is that you need wind, and more importantly the right amount. A way of getting around this is having a number of kites for different conditions. This starts to become expensive though. Here's a YouTube video that inspired me.

Archaeological excavations, sounds like an interesting subject matter. I'm imagining a scene in Egypt. I notice that you're also a diver, I've got a great rig now for my iPhone and GoPro.

I think kite iphone photography is so exciting. I feel like a little kid again just thinking about the opportunities.

I dont get to deal with many pyramids, they are rather uncommon in my part of Sweden :)

Have you posted any submerged iphone photos? I would really like to see that.

So are your archeological excavations to do with Vikings? Do they also do marine archeology in Sweden. I find that really interesting.

I love kite and underwater iPhoneography because they provide a different perspective and make you really take notice of nature. Here's a link to some underwater pics I've taken using an overboard camera bag.

Here's a link to a tutorial that I did on iPhoneography Central that shows my kite gear.

Hey Aaron. Great photos, I liked the one with the dog a lot.

I have done some viking stuff. But I find stone age stuff "sexier". I'm currently diving a lot looking for archaeology. I have been thinking of bringing the iphone down but our waters are cold and murky.

I'll continue our discussions in a private message, dont want to hijack this thread.

Very late to this thread but dang excited. We have almost identical setups. Kite, cradle, harness etc.
I did quite a bit some years ago with a point and shoot with a built-in intervalometer. Mostly pleasure work but did document a hazardous waste site just before cleanup that was similar to an archaeological survey. I was talking that work and thinking about doing some KAP again. You have inspired me to break out the equipment when warm weather comes back.
I have really enjoyed the captures you have posted and look forward to future work.

Cheers Deneh, my kit is down in Melbourne at my Dad's house as it has become an activity that we do together with my son, on Holidays etc. Please post some pics in this thread if you get that kite in the sky again. What kind of kite did you use? Cheers Aaron

The kite is a French Military one though not quite as brightly colored as yours. Works well in the wind speeds we commonly have here. There are times when I have had to launch the kite and camera and walk it around for a half mile or is to get the images needed. Very stable and predictable. Best of luck in your KAP adventures.

They are a great kite, mine works best in about 15 knot winds.

we average 12-13 here and little higher in the Spring. I also like that I can fly it almost straight overhead with the right wind. I would be interested in your parafoil experiences if you try one.
I have one for higher winds, however have only used it a couple of times. It didn't have the same stability and overhead flying as the French military kite. This would be the next one I get for lower winds. http://www.kitepower.com.au/gomberg-fled.html

Thanks Rog, the kite definitely looks like it's from the gay pride regiment of the French military. The great thing about the kite is that it has super lifting qualities in relatively light winds. Now I need to get a Parafoil (no frame) kite for stronger winds.

I was lucky enough to find a kite specialist in my state (Kitepower) that provided heaps of advice on what I'd need for the project. If anyone is interested in trying this, I strongly advise finding a specialist store in your area (in my case 2000klms away).

In a wonderful twist of fate the first person I spoke to at the Kite store was also experimenting with Kite Aerial Photography and was able to provide advice on building the rig and picavet. Here's some shots of the set-up.

That is quite a rig! Nice one!

As we've just had our summer holidays here in Oz, I got to out for some Kite Aerial Photography with my father. I've stopped sending my I device into the sky, instead using it as a control station through the GoPro app for my my new gopro camera, this means I'm now able to see what the cam is seeing in the sky from the ground. Here's a video I made of this years effort. The gopro app also allows direct import from the camera to the phone through its own WiFi connection.

Wow!! How cool is the curvature of the horizon!

@Aaron Davis Is the curvature from the camera lens, or does it really look like that? My friend just came back from a visit to Sydney and he said you can see the curvature of the earth...

Hi Cat, the higher you get the more the earths curvature can be seen, however it is exaggerated in these photos by the GoPro lens as it is a fisheye like Olloclip. It would be interesting to know if your friend was at ground level or in a plane.

He was ground level...

And he does tend to exaggerate his stories a bit... :sneaky:

Over the coming days I'm going to put some notes and pics down about my exploration into Kite Aerial iPhoneography.

The first pic is my kite, which is a French Military Kite. There are a number of kites that you can use depending on wind conditions. I took mine out today in winds that were too strong and the fibre glass cross pole snapped. Live and learn, o guess.
