Kite Aerial iPhoneography

Over the coming days I'm going to put some notes and pics down about my exploration into Kite Aerial iPhoneography.

The first pic is my kite, which is a French Military Kite. There are a number of kites that you can use depending on wind conditions. I took mine out today in winds that were too strong and the fibre glass cross pole snapped. Live and learn, o guess.

Excitement mounting... :)

Superb bright colours against a brilliant blue sky in this excellent composition Aaron...

Looking forward to the building story line and the anticipated super aerial images... complete with harness, gear and stuff of course... :D

Now what's so special about a French Military kite - especially if it can't take a bit of wind... :( ...guess they could live and learn too... :lmao:

Thanks Rog, the kite definitely looks like it's from the gay pride regiment of the French military. The great thing about the kite is that it has super lifting qualities in relatively light winds. Now I need to get a Parafoil (no frame) kite for stronger winds.

I was lucky enough to find a kite specialist in my state (Kitepower) that provided heaps of advice on what I'd need for the project. If anyone is interested in trying this, I strongly advise finding a specialist store in your area (in my case 2000klms away).

In a wonderful twist of fate the first person I spoke to at the Kite store was also experimenting with Kite Aerial Photography and was able to provide advice on building the rig and picavet. Here's some shots of the set-up.

Wow Aaron can't wait to see some of your aerial stuff - you too I expect! I love that your giving us info on the set up and everything - it's like we're on the journey with you. More please more!

Stunning Aaron! Number two and its long shadows are fantastic! Totally agree with Jilly - its magical seeing the rig and results.... and I want to see more!!!

Question - My experience of flying kites is that it flies, then crashes... do yours ever do that or are you practised enough to land safely each time?

You seriously push the boundaries of iPhoneography!

The river shot is outstanding Aaron...

How are you firing the iPhone's shutter on these images... Is it a simple delay app programme... :)

I can see you are going to be showing us some awesome stuff... :D

The great thing about the French Military Kite is that it needs little wind to stay up in the air, so if the wind drops it slowly floats to the ground. (Not my previous experience of kite flying either.)

Thanks Smooth for your encouraging comments. :)

They are amazing. I definitely get the sense of flying (and not just being on a tall thing looking down).

Hi Rog, the shutter is being fired in intervals using gorilla cam. I have put together some apps in a folder that I use or intend to use for Kite Aerial iPhoneography as shown in this reply. A weather and knot app are essential. I have also put some other apps in for experimentation e.g. Tiny Planets, Droste etc. I have posted my first Tiny Planets experiment using a previously posted image in this discussion. Cheers Aaron :)

I have thought about taking some shots, of people from above and super imposing them on these scenes as if they were flying or falling, what do you think?

I'd like to see that very much. If you could get birds that might be good too (but that might be too difficult). You might even get them without superimposing if your kite is over water. So many photo opportunities so little time!

True, true! :)

Good to see GorillaCam being put to a practical use. It's an app I downloaded, played with for a while and then better camera apps came along. It's been sitting in my scap pile for some time. I may give it another go.

Hi Richard, unfortunately I was told about GorillaCam after I'd purchased a similar app called FotoTimer. I will have to try it out and see if it produces better results. Somehow, doubt it.

I feel so late to this party. This is such an amazing project. You are much braver than me for willing to put the beloved iPhone that high in the air!

Amazing what a difference a bit of height does to a group image Aaron...

So what was the set up in the end and how did you fire off the iPhone?

Did you end up using the remote app we discussed... :D

From MiPad2 using the awesome & FREE MobiTog App... :D

I used an app called FotoTimer to shoot images in intervals. I had the sound counter going so I could hear when it was about to fire. The app you tried out for me has been purchased, however I'll need to get more in tune with the kite before I add another layer of complexity (one more thing to hold).
Maybe I'll get a chance to have another go some time this weekend.

Rog did you get my conversation invite?

In a previous post Rog wondered why I wasn't in the pic, well here I am in my very first kite aerial Iphoneography self portrait.
