MobiColour : MC #102 Theme: Found Abstracts - Jan 8-14, 2018

Oooooooh pleeeease, Jen, let us know … just the winner that (s)he can give us the theme. The particular image as well as the whys and wheres and buts and whatsoevers can wait, we just need the name. [emoji120][emoji120][emoji120] pretty pleeeeeeeaaaase! [emoji77]

Patience, Gouvy, patience :mobibabe: . I am nearly halfway through my 2500 word speech

If it becomes necessary for me to write a 5000 word speech, then the next MC can go for two weeks. You can organise the opinion poll.

I think you’re being very polite Gouvy. I’d be tempted to say “Come on zenjenny Jen. Get your ***e in gear and choose a winner. You’re not judging the Photographer of the Year”. But that’s just me.:mobibabe:

The theme honoured the unique techniques of David, Rizole and John (I still feel a little faint when I see ‘John’ and ‘abstract’ in the same sentence). ‘Found Abstracts’ referred to the only common thread I see in these artists’ images: 1. Starts with a ‘realistic’ photograph (found); and 2. The composition or edit invites us to view the original object differently (abstract).

The interpretations were many and exciting. I loved all of them — so much that I took it upon myself to make an album here. (Sorry, boss).

Inspiration:
Rizole, John & David outdid themselves (If you can’t tell whose is whose you haven’t been paying attention). Lucky for my sanity, I decided images from artists being honoured could not also win the competition. No correspondence will be entered into.

By way of Honorable Mentions:

Starzee in her enthusiasm nearly forgot what ‘colour’ meant (maybe all that art with all those kids) but came back in a big way with an amazing view of a casino through a waterfall - yeah, i know. I just took her word for it.

JillyG was on it like a proverbial, creating the extraordinary out of the ordinary with a splash of virtual paint and a clever tilt of the original image.

MotownLarry gave us a history lesson (who knew Coolidge was a quilter?!?) and some interesting gloop on a floor. I still don’t know if it’s an art installation or a kitchen accident, but it’s certainly photogenic.

Our resident graphic artist and Artistic Fruit Loop of the First Order GroovyGouvy was in her element - fairies in the pavement, tilted lines, clouds in her coffee — and who else but Gouvy would see art in a messy corner in the back of a van?

WildPlace apped an image of beautiful hand painted silk scarf, creating a vision for JillyG of her next hand painted silk scarf.

ValeriGail was persuaded to rummage in her cache and reminded us of what we’ve been missing while she’s been unwell (come back again soon, Valeri, we miss you).

terse gave us the only Found Collage of the week simply by judicious framing of a shop window. Terse

RoseCat did her usual visual alchemy, making tableaux of masking tape and torn fabric look like like magical spaces.

dscheff saw the trace of multiple stories on the floor of the Props room.

MsDee created a whole new art piece from a sculpture from Vinoy Park using the new WaterLili app.

tommy71k made a few sticks in water look stunning. What was the surprise, Tommy? The beauty of the morning?

FundyBrian demonstrated his knack for ‘looking beyond’, and knocked our socks off with unexpected views of, well, lots of things.

alexfairkon made a rare appearance (Welcome, Alex) with one of his fabulous lo-fi antique phone images. Please come again, Alex.

And the winners are:
To make my task manageable, I made my own rigorous interpretation of the David-, Rizole- and John-inspired theme, and narrowed the selection down to the closest match to my definition. No correspondence will be entered into.

I was prepared to spend another evening agonising over five images. But then I imagined another agonized plea from Gouvy for a theme, dammit, and I surrendered.

So it’s equal second: Starzee, GroovyGouvy and FundyBrian. Bcs I had to choose one: Brian’s paper, Star’s casino and Gouvy’s door. Fabulous ‘found abstracts’

And it’s dscheff first: Props to the floor. As far as I can tell moreorless unedited: an artist’s eye for the beauty and mystery in the everyday — and a reminder that we must also ‘look down’ :)

Well at last ;)
You know the thing that interests me most about this particular week is not who won it but who could have won it.
NO I don't mean me !! I mean if someone else had have judged it, they could have come up with a completely different set of results and the images would have still been wonderful. So many interesting, quality images entered and its not till you look at Jen's gallery, that you see how good it all looks together.
Well done all :)
p.s. yes I feel a little queasy myself zenjenny :p

Whew, an extravaganza! zenjenny, I enjoyed your summary of the images. Not something quickly tossed off but well thought out.
Congratulations to dscheff! Well done! Congrats also to the seconds, GroovyGouvy, Starzee, and FundyBrian, oh, hey that's me. How wonderful! This theme was an education in itself.

Such a pleasure to read this recap! So worth the wait. :inlove: :notworthy:

Super congrats to dscheff Jeffrey on the win!! Whoohoo!!! I love your image - as Jen said "an artist's eye for the beauty and mystery in the everyday" - couldn't agree more. :inlove:

We have a "No Theme" thing going on over at this week's MobiColor.... I hope that's okay? But we look forward to your judging the winner this coming Sunday! :D

Well done Starzee, GroovyGouvy and FundyBrian on your well deserved second places - absolutely loved all of your abstracts.

Wow! Thank you! No edit on this one. The image was straightened in Snapseed only: the floor really looks like that. Congratulations and kudos to all. Mobitog has taught me to not just glance around, but to look at things in a different fashion :) Oh. I will be happy to judge.
